Quick Answers to Your Questions

Articulating boom lifts (also called "knuckle booms") have multiple jointed sections that allow them to bend and reach up and over obstacles. A telescopic boom lift (also called a "straight boom") extends outward in a straight line and typically offers greater horizontal outreach and higher maximum heights. If you need flexibility around structures, go articulating. If you need maximum reach and height, telescopic is often the better choice.

Platform height is how high the floor of the basket rises. Working height typically includes an additional 6 feet to account for the operator's reach. For example: 40' platform height = approximately 46' working height. Always select a lift based on true working height to avoid coming up short on the job site.

It depends on your application. Electric boom lifts are zero-emission, quiet, and ideal for indoor use on finished floors. Diesel boom lifts are built for outdoor jobs, rough terrain, and longer run times. If you're working inside a warehouse, manufacturing plant, or retail space, electric is typically the right choice. For dirt, gravel, or uneven ground, diesel with 4WD is usually the better option.

If you're working on rough or uneven terrain, yes. A 4WD boom lift provides better traction and stability on job sites with gravel, mud, slopes, or soft ground. 2WD lifts are typically suited for smooth, flat surfaces like concrete floors.

Boom lifts range from compact 30-foot electric units all the way up to 135-foot and larger ultra-high-reach models. The right size depends on your specific job requirements and access constraints.

  1. Underestimating Working Height - Customers often calculate platform height but forget about true working height. Always factor in overhead obstructions, angles, and real-world positioning.
  2. Choosing 2WD Instead of 4WD - Selecting a 2-wheel drive boom lift for rough terrain jobs is a major mistake. Soft ground, gravel, mud, or uneven surfaces demand 4WD.
  3. Not Verifying Drive Type - Some buyers assume every diesel boom lift is 4WD. Always confirm the drivetrain, axle configuration, and gradeability before buying.
  4. Ignoring Indoor vs Outdoor Requirements - Using a diesel lift inside without proper ventilation is dangerous. For indoor jobs, a zero-emission electric boom lift with non-marking tires is the right call.
  5. Overlooking Reach and Articulation - Height isn't everything. Horizontal outreach and articulating capability matter just as much.
  6. Buying Based on Price Alone - The cheapest boom lift isn't always the best value. Service history, hours, battery condition, hydraulic performance, and safety inspections matter.

Yes. OSHA requires proper operator training and certification for aerial lift operation. Employers must ensure operators are trained and familiar with the specific type of lift being used. All lifts go out certified and should be recertified annually.

We deliver nationwide, even to challenging locations like Manhattan. If you don't have a loading dock or forklift, we arrange curbside delivery through our freight brokers.
